Phumelele Khuzwayo from Okhalweni Primary School chats to us about the Primary Curriculum

Please tell us about yourself so that readers can get to know you.

I am Gladness Phunelele Khuzwayo. I met the people from Computer Skills for Africa last year (2012). I and my colleagues have done the workshops last year. It was done quarterly until the last one in October. This year I didn't do any workshop, but I am prepared to carry on with the other workshops.

What inspires you?

What inspires me most is the way in which the activities are arranged and the work is easy to prepare.

What qualification and/or experience do you have with regard to computers

I have a Diploma in Computer Literacy.

What do you think the current educational trends are with respect to computer training?

Computer trainings must not be done quarterly they must be done maybe 3 times a month.

Why are you using the CS4A curriculum?

I am using CS4A curriculum because everything is arranged according to classes and the lessons are prepared for any learner.

How do you feel about the CS4A curriculum?

It is the easiest way to teach a child because the child does the activity on their own.

What do you enjoy most about the using the CS4A curriculum?

I enjoy the curriculum because I only check when the learners are doing their activities, they open the activities and do everything. I only help them a little bit.

What do the learners enjoy most about using the CS4A curriculum?

They enjoy it because they do everything themselves.

What part of the CS4A curriculum doesn’t work for you or the learners?

The part that needs internet as our computers are not upgraded to use internet.

How much time would you say is taken up for preparation and or admin for these lessons?

One hour.

Is the curriculum easy to understand; are there any difficult parts?

The curriculum's easy. The part that uses the internet is a challenge because we haven't done it in our workshops.

Have you printed any of the learners’ work or examples to put up in the class room?

Yes.

The CS4A curriculum is under continual development. What would you change/add to the CS4A curriculum?

For now everything is good, nothing can be changed.

Do you feel there should be a version of the CS4A curriculum in another language? If so, which language?

No english is good as every child must learn to talk english. It is a communication language.

Do you think that using the CS4A curriculum will improve computer literacy? Why?

Yes, because before the teacher had to do everything for the child, now you only open the activities and read it–the child will do everything as it's clear and understandable to every child.

Would you recommend the CS4A curriculum?

Yes.

Do you have any other comments or advice for colleagues?

I advise all my colleagues to use CS4A curriculum as it is easy to understan by any child.
